🌿Understanding Attachment Disorders

Attachment is the emotional bond between a child and their primary caregivers. When that bond is interrupted—due to neglect, trauma, loss, or inconsistency—it can affect a person’s ability to trust, connect, and feel safe in relationships. This page offers a gentle overview to help you understand the different types of attachment struggles and how healing is possible.

📘 What Causes Attachment Disruption?

Children may struggle with attachment when they’ve experienced:
- Frequent separation from caregivers
- Abuse or neglect
- Multiple placements or adoption
- Hospitalizations or early medical trauma
- Inconsistent or emotionally unavailable parenting

These early breaks in connection shape how we relate to others—sometimes well into adulthood.

🌱 Types of Attachment

- Secure attachment – built through consistent love and presence
- Insecure attachment – includes anxious, avoidant, or fearful styles
- Disorganized attachment – often linked to trauma or neglect

⚠️ Signs of Attachment Challenges

Some common signs that may point to attachment-related struggles:
- Strong fear of rejection or abandonment
- Difficulty with trust, emotional closeness, or vulnerability
- People-pleasing or avoidance of conflict
- Poor emotional regulation or explosive reactions
- Indiscriminate affection-seeking (including from strangers)
- Controlling or overly independent behavior
- Trouble with eye contact, empathy, or boundaries

In more severe cases, diagnoses like Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) or Disinhibited Social Engagement Disorder (DSED) may apply.

💛 Can People Heal from Attachment Wounds?

Yes. Attachment styles are adaptations — not life sentences. With awareness, support, and safe relationships, people can form new patterns of trust, regulation, and connection. Many begin healing much later in life—and that’s okay. It’s never too late to start.
